It's the Worst Job, but Also the Best Job
You know you are passionate about your job when our societal norms for work and play fall apart. You start working outside of work for fun. You start having fun at work.
Time stops working normally. You don’t realize you just spent hours outside of work researching your day-job. Anyone who hates their job will find you blissfully naïve.
“Just you wait. You’ll hate it soon enough.”
There is honestly a lot to hate about product management.
Plan? What plan? You make the plan, as you go, that’s your job.
Nobody you work with can quite pin down EXACTLY what it is you do. “He kinda works on a lot of things I guess…”
Guide the ship (without any of the glory of being captain, mind you), while cleaning up everyone’s mess.
Not all the glamor it’s cracked up to be. But it’s those major and minor frustrations that make the job so rewarding. To be the one coordinating the struggle though the muck to drive what gets made(!!) That’s the coolest job in the world in my opinion.
You get to be at the center of it all! Identifying a need and then working with the team to make a thing that addresses that need. That, to me, is the core of innovation. Having the opportunity to champion this process gets me up in the morning (and I’m not a morning person).
To really work to understand peoples’ problems and then see their reactions when you elegantly solve those problems…. I think it’s one of the coolest feelings out there.
I don’t think it’s something I’ll get tired of anytime soon.
